Here are a few questions to ponder and guide you when considering different homeschool approaches.
Some approaches are more directed and structured, others flexible or adaptable, and some leave it up to
you to determine the direction and content. It helps if you know what kind of a person  you are, how you
learn and teach best, and the same for your children.

  • Did your child perform well at school?
  • Does she like reading?
  • Does he like working towards a goal, such as completing assignments, without prodding?
  • Can she work independently or unsupervised?
  • Does he enjoy stable, predictable routines?
  • Are you task-oriented?
  • Does she thrive on extrinsic rewards, such as stickers, grades and certificates?
  • Does he prefer to know where he is and what is coming next?
  • Do you enjoy chatting to your children?
  • Is a fair degree of autonomy important to her?
  • Did he perform poorly and hate tests at school?
  • How creative are you?
  • Does she find it hard to sit still and concentrate?
  • Do you prefer to follow step-by-step guidance or instructions?
  • Did he complain that what he learned at school didn’t make sense?
  • Would you describe yourself as a ‘control freak’?
  • Do her eyes glaze over when listening to a lecture?
  • Is he always busy, finding things to do on his own?
  • Does his mind ‘wander’ frequently?
  • Do you love reading aloud?
  • Do you love sharing your life and passions with your children?
  • Does he find working to deadlines stressful or difficult?
  • Does she always wait to be told what to do?
  • Is he a methodical learner?
  • Are you a multi-tasker?
  • Does she frequently compare herself with others?
  • Would you prefer to be doing your chores or playing with your children?
  • Is achieving goals important to you?
  • Does she learn best if she revises or practices often?
